I passed high school drawing class by convincing my teacher to let me abandon my legacy of manual deficiencies in favor of the creation of computer art using “The Magic Box,” an external hard drive on which I had installed an openSUSE Linux distribution. The Magic Box allowed me to circumvent the administrative restrictions and paltry selection of graphics software that was available on the computer’s Windows XP installation. Every day I brought the Magic Box to class, plugged it into the existing workstation, told the BIOS to boot off the external HD, fired up capable open source graphics programs like the GIMP, and had my rudimentary way with the world of digital visual art.

Since then I have continued to produce computer graphics with regularity for one reason or another, be it school obligations, work, websites, or just for fun. I’m totally unaware of higher principles and artistic movements within graphic design (for that, see my friend Nathalie Cheng), but I have fun.
